Complete step-by-step guide to setting up eSIM on Samsung Galaxy phones. Covers S25, S24, S23, Z Fold, Z Flip, and A series with QR code, activation code, and Samsung account transfer methods.
Setting up an eSIM on your Samsung Galaxy phone gives you the freedom to add a second phone number, use a travel data plan, or separate work and personal lines — all without swapping physical SIM cards. This guide covers every Samsung model that supports eSIM, walks you through three activation methods step by step, and shows you how to manage dual SIM like a pro.
Quick Answer: Which Samsung Phones Support eSIM?
Samsung has supported eSIM since the Galaxy S20 series (2020), but there are important regional differences. Not every Galaxy phone sold in every country includes eSIM — the hardware varies by market.
Key things to know before checking the list:
- US models (S21 and later): All support eSIM. However, US-sold Galaxy S20 does NOT support eSIM despite having eSIM hardware in international variants.
- Chinese, Hong Kong, and Taiwan models: Most Samsung phones from these regions do not support eSIM, even if the same model number supports it elsewhere.
- Korean models: Limited eSIM support. Only select flagship models (S23+, S24+, Z Fold/Flip 4+) support eSIM in Korea.
- International models: Broadest eSIM support across all regions.
How to check your specific phone: Go to Settings > Connections > SIM Manager. If you see an Add eSIM option, your phone supports it. If SIM Manager only shows physical SIM options, your variant does not have eSIM capability.

Before You Start: Pre-Setup Checklist
Before adding an eSIM to your Samsung phone, go through this checklist to avoid common activation failures:
- Stable Wi-Fi connection. You need internet access to download the eSIM profile. Mobile data from an existing SIM works too, but Wi-Fi is more reliable.
- Phone is carrier-unlocked. If you bought your phone from a carrier (T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T, etc.), it may be locked to that network. A locked phone can only activate eSIMs from its own carrier. To use a travel or third-party eSIM, you need an unlocked phone. Check with your carrier or go to Settings > Connections > SIM Manager — if you can add eSIM from any provider, you are unlocked.
- QR code or activation code ready. Your eSIM provider should have given you a QR code image, an activation link, or an SM-DP+ address with an activation code. Have it accessible on another device or printed out.
- Software is up to date. Go to Settings > Software Update > Download and Install. Running the latest One UI version ensures the smoothest eSIM experience.
- EID number (optional but helpful). Some providers ask for your phone’s EID (eSIM identifier) during purchase. Find it at Settings > About Phone > Status Information > EID.
Method 1: QR Code Scan (Most Common)
This is the method used by the vast majority of eSIM providers, including Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad, and most carrier eSIM activations.
What you need: A QR code from your eSIM provider, displayed on another screen or printed on paper.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your Samsung phone.
Step 2: Tap Connections.
Step 3: Tap SIM Manager (on older One UI versions, this may say “SIM card manager”).
Step 4: Tap Add eSIM.
Step 5: Select Scan QR code. Your phone’s camera will activate.
Step 6: Point the camera at the QR code. Hold your phone steady about 6-8 inches (15-20cm) from the code. The phone will detect and read the QR code automatically.
Step 7: When the “Add mobile plan” screen appears showing your carrier details, tap Confirm (or Add).
Step 8: Wait for the eSIM profile to download and install. This typically takes 1-5 minutes depending on your internet speed and the carrier’s server.
Step 9: When prompted, give your new eSIM a custom label. Tap the default name and change it to something descriptive like “Travel Data,” “Japan eSIM,” or “Work Line.”
Step 10: Choose your preferred SIM settings — which SIM to use for calls, texts, and data. (See the Dual SIM Management section below for detailed guidance.)
Pro tip: If the QR code is on your own phone (like in an email), take a screenshot first. Then open the screenshot in your Gallery, zoom in on the QR code, and use a second device to scan it. Alternatively, choose “Enter activation code” (Method 2) and type in the details manually.
Method 2: Activation Code (Manual Entry)
Use this method when you cannot scan a QR code — for example, if your eSIM details were sent as text, the QR code will not scan properly, or you are setting up remotely.
What you need: An SM-DP+ address and an activation code from your eSIM provider. These are usually provided as a single string that looks like: LPA:1$smdp.example.com$ACTIVATION-CODE-HERE
Step 1: Open Settings > Connections > SIM Manager.
Step 2: Tap Add eSIM.
Step 3: Instead of scanning, tap Enter activation code (at the bottom of the QR scan screen).
Step 4: In the Server address (SM-DP+) field, enter the SM-DP+ address. This is the part between the first $ and the second $ in the LPA string. Example: smdp.example.com
Step 5: In the Activation code field, enter the activation code. This is everything after the second $. Example: K2-1AB-CDG-7HY
Step 6: If your provider gave you a confirmation code, enter it in the corresponding field. If not, leave it blank.
Step 7: Tap Connect or Add.
Step 8: Wait for the download and installation to complete, then label your new eSIM.
Common mistake: Do not include the
LPA:1$prefix when entering the server address. Only enter the domain that comes after it.
Method 3: Samsung Account Transfer (Samsung to Samsung)
If you are upgrading from one Samsung phone to another and want to move your eSIM, Samsung offers a built-in transfer method through Samsung Smart Switch.
Step 1: On your new Samsung phone, open Settings > Connections > SIM Manager.
Step 2: Tap Add eSIM.
Step 3: Look for the option Transfer SIM from another device or Import SIM from another device.
Step 4: Follow the on-screen instructions. Both phones need to be nearby with Bluetooth enabled.
Step 5: On your old phone, confirm the transfer when prompted.
Step 6: The eSIM will deactivate on the old device and activate on the new one.
Important: Not all carriers support eSIM transfer between devices. If the transfer option does not appear, contact your carrier to request a new QR code for your new phone. The eSIM will need to be deactivated on the old device first.
After Setup: Essential Settings
Once your eSIM is installed and active, configure these settings to ensure everything works properly — especially if you are using the eSIM for travel.
Enable Data Roaming (For Travel eSIMs)
Most travel eSIMs require data roaming to be enabled, because the eSIM connects to partner networks in your destination country.
- Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks.
- Select your travel eSIM line.
- Toggle Data Roaming to ON.
Will I get charged? No. When using a prepaid travel eSIM (like Airalo or Holafly), enabling data roaming simply allows the eSIM to connect to local partner networks. You will only use the data included in your eSIM plan — there are no surprise roaming charges because the plan is prepaid.
Set Preferred SIM for Data
Tell your phone which SIM card to use for internet access:
- Go to Settings > Connections > SIM Manager.
- Under Preferred SIMs, tap Mobile data.
- Select your travel eSIM for data.
Label Your SIMs
Clear labels prevent confusion when your phone asks which SIM to use:
- Go to Settings > Connections > SIM Manager.
- Tap on a SIM card.
- Tap the name field at the top.
- Enter a clear label: “Home,” “Travel,” “Data Only,” or the destination name.
Dual SIM Management on Samsung
Samsung’s One UI provides robust dual SIM management tools. Here is how to get the most out of running two lines simultaneously.
Switch the Data Line
To change which SIM handles your mobile data:
- Open Settings > Connections > SIM Manager.
- Under Preferred SIMs, tap Mobile data.
- Select the SIM you want to use for internet.
Quick method: Pull down the Quick Settings panel (swipe down twice from the top of the screen). If you see a SIM card toggle, tap it to switch data lines instantly.
Set Per-App SIM Preferences
On Samsung phones running One UI 5.1 or later, you can assign specific SIMs to specific apps:
- Go to Settings > Connections > SIM Manager.
- Scroll down to find App-based preferred SIM (or Per-app SIM preferences on some versions).
- For each app, choose which SIM it should use for data.
Example: Assign your travel eSIM to Google Maps, WhatsApp, and your browser, while keeping your home SIM for banking apps that require your home number.
Smart Dual SIM Feature
Samsung’s Smart Dual SIM automatically routes data to your secondary SIM when your primary SIM is busy with a voice call. This prevents data dropouts during phone calls.
- Where to find it: Settings > Connections > SIM Manager > Smart Dual SIM.
- When to enable: When you want uninterrupted internet during calls.
- When to disable: When you want strict control over which SIM uses data (to avoid unexpected roaming charges).
Make Calls or Send Texts from a Specific SIM
When you make a call or send a text, Samsung will ask which SIM to use (unless you have set a default):
- In the Phone app: Before dialing, tap the SIM icon next to the call button to choose your line.
- In Messages: When composing a new message, tap the SIM selector at the top to choose the sending line.
- Set a default: In SIM Manager, set a preferred SIM for Calls and Texts to skip the selection prompt every time.
Samsung-Specific Tips
One UI 6 vs One UI 7: Settings Path Differences
Samsung updates its interface with each One UI version. Here is where to find eSIM settings on different versions:
| One UI Version | Path to SIM Manager |
|---|---|
| One UI 7 (2025+) | Settings > Connections > SIM Manager |
| One UI 6 (2024) | Settings > Connections > SIM Manager |
| One UI 5 (2023) | Settings > Connections > SIM card manager |
| One UI 4 (2022) | Settings > Connections > SIM card manager |
| One UI 3 (2021) | Settings > Connections > SIM card manager |
The functionality is the same — only the menu name changes between “SIM Manager” (newer) and “SIM card manager” (older).
Back Up eSIM Information with Samsung Account
While eSIM profiles themselves cannot be backed up to Samsung Cloud (they are tied to the secure chip), you can save your eSIM configuration details:
- Note your eSIM provider’s name and plan details.
- Save a copy of your QR code or activation code to Samsung Notes or a secure location.
- Some providers (like Airalo) let you re-download the QR code from their app or website.
Check Your Samsung Model Number
To confirm your exact model variant (which determines eSIM support):
- Go to Settings > About Phone.
- Look for Model Number. It will be something like SM-S926B.
- The letter at the end indicates the region:
- B = International / Europe
- U = US (unlocked)
- U1 = US (carrier-specific)
- N = Korea
- 0 = China (typically no eSIM)
Troubleshooting Samsung eSIM Issues
Problem 1: “Add eSIM” Option Not Showing
Cause: Your Samsung model does not support eSIM, your phone is running old software, or the firmware for your region has eSIM disabled.
Fix:
- Update your phone: Settings > Software Update > Download and Install.
- Restart your phone after the update.
- Check your model number (see tip above) — if it ends in “0” (China variant), eSIM is not available.
- If you bought the phone from a carrier, contact them — some carriers disable eSIM in the firmware until you request it.
Problem 2: QR Code Will Not Scan
Cause: Screen glare, low QR code resolution, or the QR code has already been used.
Fix:
- Increase screen brightness on the device displaying the QR code.
- Move to a well-lit area without direct light on the screen.
- Hold your phone 6-8 inches (15-20cm) from the QR code.
- If the QR code is too small, zoom in on the display showing it.
- Try Method 2 (manual activation code entry) as a fallback.
- Contact your eSIM provider — the QR code may have been consumed already and you need a new one.
Problem 3: “Unable to Add eSIM” or Download Fails
Cause: Poor internet connection, carrier server issues, or phone is carrier-locked.
Fix:
- Switch to a different Wi-Fi network, or try mobile data instead.
- Restart your phone and try again.
- Reset network settings: Settings > General Management > Reset > Reset Network Settings. (Warning: this will forget all saved Wi-Fi passwords.)
- Wait 30 minutes and try again — the carrier server may be temporarily overloaded.
- Confirm your phone is unlocked: try inserting a SIM from a different carrier. If it does not work, contact your carrier to unlock.
Problem 4: eSIM Installed but No Data Connection
Cause: Data roaming is off, APN settings are incorrect, or the wrong SIM is selected for data.
Fix:
- Confirm the eSIM is set as the data line: Settings > Connections > SIM Manager > Preferred SIMs > Mobile data.
- Enable data roaming: Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > [eSIM line] > Data Roaming > ON.
- Toggle Airplane Mode on, wait 10 seconds, toggle off.
- Restart your phone.
- Check APN settings: Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > [eSIM line] > Access Point Names. Your eSIM provider may have specific APN settings — check their support page.
Problem 5: eSIM Disappeared After Software Update
Cause: A software update occasionally resets SIM preferences, though the eSIM profile is usually still stored on the device.
Fix:
- Go to Settings > Connections > SIM Manager. Check if the eSIM still appears but is simply toggled off.
- If the eSIM appears, toggle it ON.
- If the eSIM is completely gone, try adding it again using your original QR code or activation code.
- Contact your eSIM provider for a replacement if the profile cannot be recovered.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. How many eSIM profiles can I store on my Samsung phone?
Samsung Galaxy S25 and S24 series can store up to 20 eSIM profiles. Older models (S22, S21, Z Fold/Flip 4-5) can store approximately 5-10 profiles. However, only 1 or 2 eSIMs can be active at the same time (S25 supports 2 active eSIMs; S24 and older support 1 active eSIM alongside 1 physical SIM).
2. Does my Samsung phone need to be unlocked to use eSIM?
To use an eSIM from your own carrier, a locked phone will work. To use a third-party eSIM (such as a travel eSIM from Airalo or Holafly), your phone must be unlocked. If you bought your phone directly from Samsung unlocked, you are all set. If you bought it from a carrier, contact them to unlock it.
3. Can I use two eSIMs at the same time on Samsung?
On the Galaxy S25 series, yes — you can have two active eSIMs simultaneously, or one eSIM plus one physical SIM. On the S24 and older models, you can only have one active eSIM at a time, used alongside one physical SIM card.
4. Does Samsung support eSIM transfer when I upgrade phones?
Yes. Samsung Smart Switch can transfer eSIM profiles between Samsung Galaxy phones, though carrier support varies. If the built-in transfer does not work, contact your carrier for a new QR code for your new device. Always deactivate the eSIM on the old phone first.
5. Why does my US Galaxy S20 not have eSIM?
The US version of the Galaxy S20 (SM-G981U) does not include eSIM hardware. This was a decision by Samsung and US carriers at the time. The international variant (SM-G981B) does support eSIM. Starting with the S21 series, all US Samsung flagships include eSIM.
6. Can I use eSIM on a Samsung phone bought in China?
No. Samsung phones manufactured for and sold in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan do not support eSIM, regardless of model. This is a hardware restriction based on regional regulations. If you need eSIM on a Samsung phone, purchase an international, US, or European variant.

使用第三方eSIM(如旅行eSIM)需要解锁的手机。
通常以这样的格式提供:LPA:1$smdp.example.com$激活码
例如:smdp.example.com

使用第三方eSIM(如旅行eSIM),手机必须解锁。
美版Galaxy S20(SM-G981U)未配备eSIM硬件。
