Google Pixel phones are among the most eSIM-friendly Android devices on the market. Starting with the Pixel 2 (for Google Fi users), Google has been an early adopter of eSIM technology, and modern Pixels offer some of the smoothest eSIM setup experiences available. This guide walks you through every step — from checking compatibility to installing your eSIM and managing dual SIM on any Pixel phone.

Quick Answer: Which Pixels Support eSIM?

Google has included eSIM support in Pixel phones since 2017, with each generation expanding compatibility. Here is the complete list:

  • Pixel 9 Pro Fold / 9 Pro XL / 9 Pro / 9 / 9a — 2 eSIMs (can use both simultaneously)
  • Pixel 8 Pro / 8 / 8a — 2 eSIMs (can use both simultaneously)
  • Pixel 7 Pro / 7 / 7a — 2 eSIMs (can use both simultaneously)
  • Pixel Fold — 2 eSIMs
  • Pixel 6 Pro / 6 / 6a — 1 eSIM + 1 nano-SIM
  • Pixel 5 / 5a — 1 eSIM + 1 nano-SIM
  • Pixel 4 XL / 4 / 4a / 4a 5G — 1 eSIM + 1 nano-SIM
  • Pixel 3a XL / 3a — 1 eSIM + 1 nano-SIM (regional restrictions apply)
  • Pixel 3 XL / 3 — 1 eSIM + 1 nano-SIM (significant regional restrictions)
  • Pixel 2 XL / 2 — eSIM only for Google Fi (US only)

Not supported: Original Pixel (2016), Pixel XL (2016). These models were released before eSIM technology was incorporated into Pixel phones.

Important regional restrictions:

  • Pixel 3 / 3 XL: eSIM does NOT work on models purchased in Australia, Taiwan, and Japan. Phones bought from US/Canadian carriers other than Sprint or Google Fi also lack eSIM support.
  • Pixel 3a / 3a XL: eSIM does NOT work on models purchased in Southeast Asia or on Verizon in the US.
  • Pixel 2 / 2 XL: eSIM only works with Google Fi service in the United States. No other carrier or country is supported.
  • Pixel 4 and later: All variants support eSIM in all regions. No restrictions.

Key insight: Starting with the Pixel 7 series, Google enabled dual active eSIM — meaning you can run two eSIM lines at the same time without needing a physical SIM at all. This is a significant advantage for travelers who want to keep their home number active on one eSIM and use a local data eSIM on the second.

Before You Start: Pre-Setup Checklist

Before adding an eSIM to your Pixel, confirm these essentials:

  • Wi-Fi connection active. Google recommends using Wi-Fi for eSIM installation. While mobile data from an existing SIM can work, Wi-Fi provides a more stable download and avoids potential issues with captive portals.
  • Phone is unlocked. If you bought your Pixel from Google Store directly, it is unlocked. If you bought it from a carrier (T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T), it may be carrier-locked. A locked phone can only activate eSIMs from its own carrier. Check: Settings > About Phone > SIM Status — look for “Network” information or try inserting a SIM from a different carrier.
  • QR code or activation details ready. Have your eSIM provider’s QR code accessible on another device or printed. If you received an activation code, have it copied and ready to paste.
  • Android version is current. Go to Settings > System > System Update. Android 14 and 15 have improved eSIM interfaces that make setup easier. Older versions work too, but the menu names may differ slightly.
  • EID number (if requested). Some eSIM providers ask for your EID during purchase. Find it at Settings > About Phone > EID (or Settings > About Phone > SIM Status > EID on some versions).

Step-by-Step: Add eSIM to Google Pixel

Method 1: Scan a QR Code (Most Common)

This is the standard method used by virtually all eSIM providers, including Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad, and major carriers.

What you need: A QR code from your eSIM provider.

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your Pixel.

Step 2: Tap Network & Internet.

Step 3: Tap SIMs (on Android 13 and older, this may say “Mobile network” or “SIM cards”).

Step 4: Tap Add SIM (or the + icon at the bottom of the SIM list).

Step 5: When asked how you want to add a SIM, select Download a SIM (or Set up eSIM on some versions). This tells your Pixel you are installing a digital SIM, not a physical one.

Step 6: Your phone’s camera will open for QR code scanning. Point the camera at the QR code from your eSIM provider. Keep the phone steady until it recognizes the code — you will see a confirmation animation.

Step 7: The carrier plan details will appear on screen showing the provider name and plan type. Review the information and tap Download or Confirm.

Step 8: Wait for the eSIM profile to download and install. On Pixel 9, this typically takes 2-5 minutes. On older models, it may take slightly longer. Do not close Settings or turn off Wi-Fi during this process.

Step 9: Once installation is complete, you will be asked to activate the eSIM. Tap Turn on or Activate.

Step 10: Your Pixel will restart its cellular connection. Within a minute, you should see a signal indicator for your new eSIM line. If prompted, label the new SIM (e.g., “Travel,” “Data Only,” “Japan”).

Pro tip: If the QR code is on your own Pixel screen (in an email or app), take a screenshot first. Then you can use Method 2 (manual entry) to input the activation details, since you cannot scan a QR code displayed on the same phone.

Method 2: Manual Entry (Activation Code)

Use this when you cannot scan a QR code, or when your eSIM provider sent you text-based credentials.

What you need: An SM-DP+ address and activation code. These typically come in a string format: LPA:1$smdp.example.com$YOUR-ACTIVATION-CODE

Step 1: Go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Add SIM.

Step 2: Select Download a SIM.

Step 3: On the QR code scanning screen, tap Need help? at the bottom, then select Enter code manually (or simply tap Enter it manually if that option appears directly).

Step 4: In the activation code field, enter the full activation string provided by your eSIM provider. On Pixel phones, you can often paste the entire LPA string in one field (including the LPA:1$ prefix), and the phone will parse it correctly.

Step 5: Tap Continue or Add.

Step 6: Wait for the download and activation to complete (2-5 minutes).

Step 7: Activate the new eSIM when prompted.

Pixel-specific note: Unlike Samsung, Pixel phones are often smart enough to accept the full LPA string (including LPA:1$) and split it into the correct fields automatically. If you encounter an error, try entering just the SM-DP+ address and activation code separately.

Method 3: Carrier App Activation

Some carriers offer eSIM activation through their own app, which can be the smoothest experience if your carrier supports it.

Step 1: Download your carrier’s official app from the Google Play Store (e.g., T-Mobile, Verizon, My AT&T, Google Fi).

Step 2: Open the app and sign in to your account.

Step 3: Navigate to the eSIM or SIM management section.

Step 4: Follow the in-app instructions to activate your eSIM. The app will communicate directly with your Pixel’s eSIM chip.

Step 5: When your Pixel asks you to confirm the new cellular plan in Settings, tap Confirm.

Google Fi users: If you use Google Fi, eSIM activation is built directly into the Fi app and is the recommended method. Open the Fi app, sign in, and select “Set up eSIM.” Google Fi offers one of the smoothest eSIM experiences on Pixel phones.

Android 14 & 15: The New eSIM Management Interface

Google has progressively improved the eSIM management experience with each Android version. If your Pixel runs Android 14 or 15, you benefit from a cleaner, more intuitive interface.

What Changed in Android 14

  • Unified SIM management: Physical SIMs and eSIMs are managed in the same place — Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs. No more separate menus.
  • Improved QR scanning: The QR code scanner is more reliable and works in lower light conditions.
  • Better dual SIM indicators: The status bar shows distinct icons for each active SIM line.

What Changed in Android 15

  • Faster eSIM provisioning: Download and activation times are noticeably shorter.
  • Enhanced SIM switching: Quick Settings now includes a more prominent SIM toggle for rapid line switching.
  • Better APN management: Automatic APN detection is improved, reducing the need for manual APN configuration.
  • eSIM reliability improvements: Fewer failed downloads and better error recovery.

Settings Path Comparison by Android Version

Android VersionPath to eSIM Settings
Android 15Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Add SIM
Android 14Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Add SIM
Android 13Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > + (Add)
Android 12Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile network > Advanced > Carrier > Add carrier
Android 11Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile network > Advanced > Carrier > Add carrier

Recommendation: If you are running Android 12 or 13, update to Android 14 or 15 before setting up eSIM. The improved interface makes the process significantly smoother and reduces common errors.

Pixel-Specific Features

eSIM Transfer Tool (Pixel to Pixel)

When upgrading from one Pixel to another, you can transfer your eSIM without contacting your carrier — if the carrier supports it.

During initial setup (recommended):

  1. When setting up your new Pixel, select Transfer SIM when prompted about SIM setup.
  2. Bring your old Pixel nearby with Bluetooth enabled.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions on both devices.
  4. The eSIM will deactivate on the old Pixel and activate on the new one.

After initial setup:

  1. On your new Pixel, go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Add SIM.
  2. Look for a Transfer option that detects your nearby old Pixel.
  3. If available, follow the transfer flow.

Not all carriers support eSIM transfer. If the option does not appear, contact your carrier. They will deactivate the eSIM on your old phone and issue a new QR code for your new device.

Google Fi eSIM (US Users)

If you are a Google Fi subscriber, your Pixel has a uniquely integrated eSIM experience:

  • Automatic activation: When you sign into your Google account during Pixel setup and you have a Fi subscription, eSIM activates automatically.
  • Fi app management: Open the Google Fi app to manage your eSIM, switch plans, add data, or pause service.
  • International roaming: Google Fi offers free international data in 200+ countries. Your Pixel’s eSIM automatically connects to local networks when you travel.
  • Dual SIM with Fi: You can use Google Fi on eSIM and a local SIM in the nano-SIM slot simultaneously — useful for travelers who want a local number alongside Fi.

Dual SIM Configuration on Pixel

Once you have two active SIMs (either eSIM+eSIM or eSIM+nano-SIM), configure your Pixel for optimal dual SIM usage.

Set the default data SIM:

  1. Go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs.
  2. Tap on the SIM you want for mobile data.
  3. Toggle Mobile data to ON for this SIM.
  4. Optional: Toggle Roaming to ON if using a travel eSIM.

Set the default call and text SIM:

  1. In Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs, you will see both SIM cards listed.
  2. Tap on your preferred SIM for calls.
  3. Under Calling preference, select this SIM as the default for outgoing calls.
  4. For SMS, select your preferred SIM under SMS preference.

Switch data between SIMs quickly:

  1. Swipe down to open Quick Settings.
  2. Look for the Internet tile.
  3. Tap it to see your available SIM options and switch data lines.

Traveler’s recommended setup:

SettingHome SIMTravel eSIM

SMSDefault
RoamingOFFON

This configuration keeps your home number active for receiving calls and texts, while all internet traffic goes through your travel eSIM’s local data.

Troubleshooting Pixel eSIM Issues

Problem 1: “Add SIM” Option Not Appearing

Cause: Your Pixel model does not support eSIM (rare for Pixel 4+), the phone is running an outdated Android version, or a software glitch is hiding the option.

Fix:

  1. Update Android: Settings > System > System Update.
  2. Restart your Pixel (hold Power button > Restart).
  3. Check your model: Settings > About Phone > Model. Confirm it is Pixel 3 or newer.
  4. For Pixel 3/3a: Verify your phone was not purchased in a restricted region (Australia, Taiwan, Japan, or Southeast Asia).
  5. Factory reset as a last resort (back up data first): Settings > System > Reset > Erase all data. Sometimes a fresh start resolves hidden software issues.

Problem 2: eSIM Download Fails or Times Out

Cause: Weak internet connection, carrier server issues, or the eSIM profile has already been consumed.

Fix:

  1. Switch to a different Wi-Fi network. Avoid public Wi-Fi with captive portals (hotel/airport Wi-Fi that requires login).
  2. Turn off VPN if you have one running — VPNs can interfere with eSIM provisioning.
  3. Restart your Pixel and try again.
  4. Wait 15-30 minutes. Carrier provisioning servers sometimes experience temporary overloads, especially during peak hours or after a new phone launch.
  5. Try Method 2 (manual activation code entry) if QR scanning repeatedly fails.
  6. Contact your eSIM provider — the QR code may have been used already, and they can re-issue it.

Problem 3: eSIM Active but No Internet Connection

Cause: Data roaming disabled, wrong SIM selected for data, or APN configuration issue.

Fix:

  1. Verify the eSIM is set as the data SIM: Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > [your eSIM] > Mobile data > ON.
  2. Enable roaming: Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > [your eSIM] > Roaming > ON.
  3. Toggle Airplane Mode: Turn it ON, wait 15 seconds, turn it OFF.
  4. Restart your Pixel.
  5. Check APN settings: Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > [your eSIM] > Access Point Names. If blank, add the APN settings provided by your eSIM provider. If you are unsure, contact the provider.
  6. Reset network settings: Settings > System > Reset > Reset Wi-Fi, Mobile & Bluetooth. (Warning: this will remove all saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth pairings.)

Problem 4: Phone Shows “SIM Not Provisioned” or “Invalid SIM”

Cause: The eSIM profile did not install correctly, or there is a mismatch between the eSIM and your carrier.

Fix:

  1. Remove the eSIM: Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > [problematic eSIM] > Delete SIM.
  2. Restart your Pixel.
  3. Re-install the eSIM using your QR code or activation code.
  4. If the error persists, contact your eSIM provider. They may need to re-provision the eSIM for your specific device.

Problem 5: Cannot Use Both SIMs Simultaneously

Cause: Your Pixel model only supports one active eSIM (Pixel 6 and older), or the second SIM is toggled off.

Fix:

  1. Check your model. Dual active eSIM is only available on Pixel 7 and later. Pixel 6 and older can only use 1 eSIM + 1 physical SIM simultaneously.
  2. Go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs and make sure both SIMs are toggled ON.
  3. If using Pixel 7+, ensure both eSIMs are activated — tap each one and confirm it is enabled.
  4. Restart your Pixel after enabling both SIMs.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How many eSIM profiles can I store on my Pixel?

You can store multiple eSIM profiles on your Pixel (the exact number varies by model, but typically 5-8 profiles). On Pixel 7 and later, you can have 2 eSIMs active simultaneously. On Pixel 4-6, only 1 eSIM can be active at a time alongside 1 physical SIM. You can store inactive profiles and switch between them without re-downloading.

2. Does my Pixel need to be unlocked to use a travel eSIM?

Yes, for third-party eSIMs (like travel data eSIMs from Airalo or Holafly), your Pixel must be carrier-unlocked. Pixels bought directly from the Google Store are unlocked. Carrier-purchased Pixels may be locked — contact your carrier to check and unlock if needed. A locked Pixel can only use eSIMs from its own carrier.

3. Can I transfer my eSIM when I upgrade to a new Pixel?

Yes. Google offers an eSIM transfer feature during the new phone setup process. Bring your old Pixel nearby with Bluetooth on, and the setup wizard will offer to transfer your eSIM. If your carrier does not support automatic transfer, they can issue a new QR code for your new device. Always deactivate the eSIM on your old phone first.

4. Does Google Fi automatically use eSIM on Pixel?

Yes. Google Fi prefers eSIM activation on Pixel phones. When you sign into your Google account on a new Pixel with an active Fi subscription, the eSIM activates automatically. You can also manage your Fi eSIM through the Google Fi app. Fi supports using eSIM on Pixel alongside a physical SIM from another carrier.

5. Why does my Pixel 3 not show eSIM options?

Pixel 3 models purchased in Australia, Taiwan, and Japan do not support eSIM. Similarly, Pixel 3 phones bought from US and Canadian carriers other than Sprint and Google Fi lack eSIM capability. If your Pixel 3 is from one of these restricted sources, there is unfortunately no software fix — the eSIM was not enabled in the firmware for these variants.

6. Is Pixel eSIM setup different from Samsung eSIM setup?

The process is very similar — both use QR codes and activation codes. The main differences are:

  • Settings path: Pixel uses Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs, while Samsung uses Settings > Connections > SIM Manager.
  • Dual eSIM: Pixel 7+ supports dual active eSIM; Samsung only enabled this starting with the S25 series.
  • LPA string handling: Pixel often accepts the full LPA:1$... string in one field, while Samsung typically requires you to split the SM-DP+ address and activation code into separate fields.
  • Transfer tool: Both offer device-to-device eSIM transfer, but the implementation differs (Google’s setup wizard vs. Samsung Smart Switch).

使用第三方eSIM(如Airalo、Holafly的旅行eSIM),Pixel必须是无锁版。
