Picture this: you have just landed in Tokyo after a 14-hour flight. You are tired, disoriented, and desperately need Google Maps to find your hotel shuttle. You pull out your phone and realize your eSIM is not set up. The airport WiFi requires a phone number you cannot receive texts on. The cellular data from your home SIM costs $15 per megabyte. You are stuck.

This scenario happens to travelers every single day. And it is 100% avoidable.

The best time to set up your travel eSIM is not at the airport, not on the plane, and definitely not after you land. It is the night before your flight, sitting comfortably at home with a strong WiFi connection and zero stress.

This guide gives you the complete pre-departure checklist — seven steps that take about 15 minutes total and will save you from connectivity headaches on arrival day.

TL;DR — The 7-Step Checklist

  1. Check your phone supports eSIM
  2. Confirm your phone is carrier-unlocked
  3. Buy your travel eSIM (1-3 days before departure)
  4. Install the eSIM profile (but do not activate yet)
  5. Label your SIM lines clearly
  6. Download offline essentials (maps, translations, documents)
  7. Test everything on your home WiFi

Do all seven, and you will land with internet access within 60 seconds of turning off airplane mode. Now let us walk through each step in detail.

Step 1: Check Your Phone is eSIM Compatible

Not every phone supports eSIM. Before you spend money on one, verify your device can actually use it.

Quick Compatibility Check

On iPhone:

  1. Go to Settings > General > About
  2. Scroll down and look for EID (a 32-digit number)
  3. If you see an EID, your iPhone supports eSIM

Alternatively, dial *#06# from your phone app. If an EID appears alongside your IMEI, you are good to go.

On Android (Samsung, Google Pixel, etc.):

  1. Go to Settings > About Phone > Status Information
  2. Look for EID or eSIM ID
  3. Or dial *#06# to check

Phones That Support eSIM (Quick Reference)

BrandeSIM-Compatible Models
AppleiPhone XS and later (2018+), iPhone SE 3rd gen (2022+)
SamsungGalaxy S20 and later, Galaxy Z Flip/Fold series, Galaxy A54 and later
GooglePixel 3a and later
OthersXiaomi 13 series+, Oppo Find X5+, Motorola Razr series, OnePlus 12+

Important: The iPhone SE 2nd generation (2020) does NOT support eSIM in some regions. Double-check if you have this model.

If your phone is not on the list, do not worry. Check our complete eSIM device compatibility guide for the full list.

Step 2: Make Sure Your Phone is Unlocked

A carrier-locked phone may block you from installing a third-party eSIM. This is the number one reason eSIM installations fail for travelers, and it is heartbreaking when you discover it at the airport.

How to Check if Your Phone is Unlocked

On iPhone (iOS 16+):

  1. Go to Settings > General > About
  2. Scroll down to Carrier Lock or Network Provider Lock
  3. It should say “No SIM restrictions”

On Android:

  1. Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Network Operators
  2. If your phone can search for other networks, it is likely unlocked
  3. Or try inserting a different carrier’s SIM card — if it works, the phone is unlocked

Universal method: Call your current carrier and ask, “Is my phone unlocked for use with other carriers?”

What If Your Phone is Locked?

  • Contact your carrier: Most carriers will unlock your phone for free if you have paid it off or completed your contract
  • Timeline: Unlocking can take 24 hours to 5 business days, so do NOT leave this to the last minute
  • US carriers: AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon all offer free unlocking for eligible devices through their websites or customer service

Do this NOW, not the day before your flight. Carrier unlocking is the one step that can take days. Check your unlock status at least one week before departure.

Step 3: Buy Your eSIM (1-3 Days Before Departure)

You do not need to buy your eSIM weeks in advance, but you also should not wait until you are boarding. The sweet spot is 1-3 days before your departure.

Why This Timing Works

  • Too early (weeks ahead): Some eSIMs start their validity countdown upon installation. Buying too early means wasted days.
  • Just right (1-3 days): Enough time to install, test, and troubleshoot if needed. No risk of wasting validity.
  • Too late (at the airport): Stressful, possibly slow WiFi, no time to troubleshoot if something goes wrong.

What to Look For When Buying

FactorWhat to Check
CoverageDoes the plan cover your destination country/region?
Data amountLight use (maps + messaging): 1-3 GB. Moderate (social + streaming): 5-10 GB. Heavy: 10+ GB.
Validity periodMatch it to your trip length. Most plans offer 7, 15, or 30 days.
Activation policyWhen does the clock start? Upon installation, or upon first connection at destination? (See the table below.)
Provider appDoes the provider have an app? App-based installation is often easier than QR code scanning.

When Does Your eSIM Data Plan Actually Start? (Provider Comparison)

This is critical. Different providers have different activation policies, and getting this wrong means your data could be ticking away before you even leave home.

ProviderWhen Validity StartsCan You Pre-Install?Best Practice
AiraloWhen eSIM first connects to a supported network at destinationYes, install anytimeInstall at home, activate at destination
SailyWhen eSIM first connects to a supported network at destinationYes, install anytimeInstall at home, activate at destination
HolaflyWhen you turn on data roaming at destinationYes, install at homeInstall at home, turn on roaming only after landing
NomadDepends on package — check “validity policy” in package detailsYes for most plansCheck your specific plan’s policy before installing
aloSIMWhen eSIM first connects to a supported networkYes, install anytimeInstall at home, activate at destination
UbigiWhen data plan is activated (separate step from installation)Yes, install anytimeInstall at home, activate plan after landing
RoamlessWhen eSIM first connects to local networkYes, install anytimeInstall at home, activate at destination

Key Takeaway: Most major travel eSIM providers support pre-installation. The data clock does NOT start when you install — it starts when you connect to a network at your destination. But always check your specific plan’s activation policy in the purchase details.

Step 4: Install the eSIM Profile (But Do Not Activate Yet)

This is the most important step. Install your eSIM at home, where you have reliable WiFi, but do NOT turn it on for data yet.

Installation via QR Code

On iPhone:

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM
  2. Tap Use QR Code
  3. Point your camera at the QR code from your provider’s email (displayed on a laptop screen, tablet, or printed out)
  4. Wait for the profile to download (usually 30-60 seconds)
  5. When prompted, tap Add Cellular Plan
  6. Do NOT set it as default data line yet

On Android:

  1. Go to Settings > Connections > SIM Manager > Add eSIM
  2. Tap Scan QR Code
  3. Scan the QR code from your provider
  4. Wait for download to complete
  5. Do NOT enable the eSIM for mobile data yet

Installation via Provider App (Easier for Most People)

If your provider has a mobile app (Airalo, Holafly, Saily all do), the app guides you through installation automatically:

  1. Download the provider’s app
  2. Log in to your account
  3. Go to “My eSIMs” and tap Install
  4. Follow the in-app instructions
  5. The app handles the QR code scanning internally

After Installation

Once installed, the eSIM will appear in your phone’s SIM list, likely showing as “Inactive” or “Not Connected.” This is exactly what you want. The profile is on your phone, ready to go, and you will not need internet to activate it later.

Pro Tip: Take a screenshot of your QR code and save the activation code text. If you ever need to reinstall (e.g., after a factory reset), you will need these. Some providers only allow one-time QR code use, but having a backup is still wise.

Step 5: Label Your SIM Lines

When you have two SIM profiles on your phone (your regular SIM + travel eSIM), things can get confusing fast. Labeling your lines takes 30 seconds and prevents mistakes later.

On iPhone:

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular
  2. Tap on each SIM line
  3. Tap Cellular Plan Label
  4. Choose a clear name: “Personal” for your home SIM, “Travel Japan” or “Europe Data” for your eSIM

On Android:

  1. Go to Settings > Connections > SIM Manager
  2. Tap on each SIM
  3. Edit the name to something clear
LineLabel ExamplePurpose
Home SIM”Personal” or “Home AT&T”Calls, texts, home data
Travel eSIM”Travel Japan” or “Europe Data”Data abroad

This way, when you are jetlagged and fumbling with settings at 2 AM in a foreign hotel, you will know exactly which line to enable for data.

Step 6: Download Offline Essentials

Your eSIM will give you data abroad, but the first few minutes after landing — before your eSIM connects — are when you need information most. Download these before you leave.

Offline Maps

Google Maps:

  1. Open Google Maps
  2. Search for your destination city
  3. Tap your profile picture > Offline Maps > Select Your Own Map
  4. Zoom to cover the area you need (airport, hotel, key attractions)
  5. Tap Download (typical city download: 50-200 MB)

Apple Maps (iOS 17+):

  1. Open Apple Maps
  2. Tap your profile picture
  3. Tap Offline Maps > Download New Map
  4. Search for your destination and adjust the area
  5. Tap Download

Download the area around your airport and hotel at minimum. You can always download more areas once your eSIM is connected.

Offline Translation

Google Translate:

  1. Open Google Translate
  2. Tap the download icon next to your destination’s language
  3. The language pack downloads for offline use (typically 30-50 MB)
  4. Test it in airplane mode to confirm it works

Apple Translate (iOS):

  1. Open the Translate app
  2. Tap the language name > Download the language you need

Travel Documents (Save Offline)

Download or screenshot these BEFORE you board:

  • Boarding pass (PDF or screenshot)
  • Hotel/Airbnb confirmation with address (screenshot, not just a booking link)
  • Airport-to-hotel transportation instructions
  • Emergency contacts and embassy address
  • eSIM provider’s customer support info and your account details
  • Your eSIM’s QR code (screenshot as backup)

Why screenshots matter: Booking confirmation emails with “View Your Reservation” links require internet. A screenshot works offline, every time.

Step 7: Test Everything on Your Home WiFi

Do not skip this step. A quick test at home can prevent 30 minutes of troubleshooting at the airport.

What to Test

  1. Verify the eSIM is installed: Go to Settings > Cellular (iPhone) or Settings > Connections > SIM Manager (Android). You should see your travel eSIM listed.
  2. Check the label: Is your travel eSIM clearly labeled?
  3. Verify offline maps: Turn on Airplane Mode and open Google Maps. Can you navigate around your destination?
  4. Verify offline translation: Still in Airplane Mode, open Google Translate. Can you translate phrases in your destination’s language?
  5. Check travel documents: Still offline — can you open your boarding pass, hotel confirmation, and transport directions?

Do NOT Test This

  • Do NOT turn on the eSIM’s data connection at home. For most providers, this will not cause problems (the eSIM only activates at the destination network). But for some providers, enabling data roaming could start the validity countdown. Leave the data toggle OFF until you land.

Departure Day: Your Airport Checklist

You have done all the prep. Here is your departure day quick reference:

Before Leaving Home

  • Phone charged to 100%
  • Travel eSIM shows as installed in Settings
  • Offline maps, translations, and documents downloaded
  • Portable battery pack in carry-on bag
  • eSIM provider’s support contact saved in phone

At the Airport (Before Boarding)

  • Keep your home SIM active — you may need it for 2FA texts from your bank or airline
  • Do NOT remove your physical SIM if you have a dual-SIM phone
  • Confirm your boarding pass is accessible offline

During the Flight

Your eSIM is safe. Airplane mode does not affect installed eSIM profiles. The profile is stored locally on your device and does not need a signal to remain installed.

After Landing

This is the moment everything comes together:

  1. Turn off Airplane Mode as soon as the seatbelt sign goes off
  2. Go to Settings > Cellular (iPhone) or Settings > Connections > SIM Manager (Android)
  3. Set your travel eSIM as the default data line
  4. Turn on Data Roaming for the travel eSIM line
  5. Wait 30-60 seconds for the phone to find and connect to a local network
  6. Test: Open a browser and load any webpage, or send a message

If the signal bar shows service and a webpage loads, you are connected. The whole process takes under 2 minutes.

Not connecting? Toggle Airplane Mode on and off again. If that does not work, restart your phone. These two steps resolve 80% of connection issues. For more help, see our eSIM Troubleshooting Guide.

What If Something Goes Wrong at the Airport

Even with perfect preparation, things can occasionally go sideways. Here are your emergency backup plans:

eSIM Will Not Connect After Landing

  1. Toggle Airplane Mode on, wait 10 seconds, toggle off
  2. Restart your phone completely
  3. Check Data Roaming is ON for the eSIM line
  4. Manually select a network: Settings > Cellular > Network Selection > turn off Automatic, then select a listed carrier
  5. Contact your eSIM provider’s support (you saved their info offline, right?)

You Forgot to Install the eSIM Before Departure

  • Use airport WiFi to install it now. Most international airports have free WiFi (though it may be slow or require registration)
  • Use a friend’s hotspot if traveling with someone who has data
  • Buy a temporary local SIM at an airport kiosk to get online, then install your eSIM

Your QR Code Will Not Scan

  • Use the manual activation code instead. Every eSIM provider includes an SM-DP+ address and activation code alongside the QR code. Enter these manually in your eSIM settings.
  • Check your email for the code: look for a long string starting with “LPA:1$“

Your Phone is Carrier-Locked (Discovered Too Late)

  • This is the hardest problem to solve at the airport. Your options:
    • Buy a physical SIM card from an airport vendor
    • Use WiFi-only for the start of your trip
    • Call your carrier’s international support line to request an emergency unlock (unlikely to be instant, but worth trying)

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance can I buy my travel eSIM?

Most providers allow you to purchase weeks or even months in advance. The eSIM profile itself does not expire once installed (though some providers set a limit — check your provider’s FAQ). The data plan countdown starts when you first connect to a network at your destination, not when you buy or install. That said, 1-3 days before departure is the ideal window because it gives you time to install and test without any risk.

Can I activate my eSIM on the airplane?

Generally no. eSIM activation requires connecting to a cellular network, which is not available in flight. Even flights with WiFi typically use satellite-based internet that does not support eSIM profile downloads or cellular authentication. Wait until you land.

Do I need to turn off my home SIM when I activate the travel eSIM?

No. Modern dual-SIM phones can keep both SIMs active simultaneously. Your home SIM handles calls and texts, while your travel eSIM handles data. In fact, keeping your home SIM active is recommended so you can receive verification texts from your bank or other services.

What if I arrive and decide to buy an eSIM instead of preparing in advance?

You can, but it adds unnecessary stress. You will need internet to purchase and download the eSIM, which means hunting for airport WiFi or buying a temporary connection first. If you do find yourself in this situation, airport WiFi + a provider’s mobile app is your fastest path. Airalo, Holafly, and Saily all offer in-app purchase and instant installation.

Will my eSIM data plan start counting down immediately after I install it?

For most travel eSIM providers, no. The countdown typically begins when the eSIM first connects to a supported network at your destination. However, a small number of providers start the countdown at installation. Always check the “activation policy” or “validity policy” in your plan details before purchasing. See the provider comparison table earlier in this article.

Do I need to set up APN settings manually?

In most cases, no. Travel eSIM providers configure APN settings automatically during installation. If your eSIM installs successfully but you cannot get data, incorrect APN settings might be the issue. Check your provider’s support page for the correct APN configuration, or see our troubleshooting guide for step-by-step APN instructions.

  3. 购买旅行eSIM(出发前1-3天)

  2. 向下滑动,找 EID(一串32位数字)

  2. EIDeSIM ID

iPhone(iOS 16以上):

第3步:购买旅行eSIM(出发前1-3天)

iPhone:

iPhone:

Google Maps:

  1. 打开Google Maps

Google

App

大多数国际机场有免费WiFi(可能慢一些或需要注册)
